Ruth Walker

As the sun rose on June 5th, 2020, Velma Ruth Phillips Walker entered the house of the Lord. She was surrounded by loving family and caregivers in her home of 60 years, in Blountsville Alabama. She was preceded in death by two husbands, John W. (Jake) Phillips Jr. and Don Walker. Her comments were “She was blessed to have two husbands (Jake & Don) that were exceptional providers that loved her.” Her first marriage produced one son, Joey Phillips (Susan) of Charleston, SC and the second, a daughter, Mary Alice Walker Bagwell (Josh), of Blountsville, AL. She enjoyed the abundant love of her grandchildren, John Phillips of Spring Lake, NC , Joe Phillips (Sarah) of Charleston, Lindsey Ruth Phillips of Mount Pleasant, SC, and Colby Bagwell of Blountsville,AL; four great-grandchildren Haley Phillips, Elaina Phillips, Garrett Phillips and Maddy Causey. Ruth was born December 11th, 1931 to the Rev. H.C. Kimbrell and Mary Knight Kimbrell, in Oneonta, AL. A preacher’s daughter, the youngest of five siblings, attended Blount County High School in Oneonta where she enjoyed cheerleading. She has maintained many life-long friendships from those early years. She committed her life to Christ at the Oneonta First Baptist Church. Ruth was a faithful member of the Blountsville Baptist Church & Choir for over 60 years. Even when her eyesight was limiting her participation, she regularly attended all services and memorized the music so she could continue singing with the choir. Ruth was active in various organizations and activities such as the Blountsville Baptist Church, Blountsville Culture Club, Alabama Low Vision, and Class reunions. The family expresses appreciation to all extended family members and friends who have participated in her care over the years. Since her blindness and chronic illness a special thanks to her two nieces Sammie Gorham and Jackie Shell, her daughter Mary Bagwell, and Julie Carter who never failed to provide help when needed. Her profound gift of singing and humor at any occasion provided enjoyment to all ages while leaving a lasting impression. Funeral Service was Sunday June 7, 2020, at 3 PM at Blountsville Baptist Church with Bro. Randall Edmondson officiating. Burial followed in Oak Hill Cemetery with Blountsville Funeral Home directing. Pallbearers were: Larry Goble, Terry Ratliff, Jimmy McHan, Joey Morrison, Joe Curlette and Keith MacConkey; Honorary were: Deacons of Blountsville Baptist Church, John Ferguson, James Brown and Bud Haynes Memorial gifts may be given to Blountsville Baptist Church in her memory.
