Tom Graves

TSgt William Tommy “Tom” Graves, USAF, Retired, age 80 of Blountsville passed away Wednesday, February 1, 2023, at Huntsville Hospital. Mr. Graves was born September 30, 1942, in Birmingham. He was the son of the late Byron William Graves and Grace McPherson Graves. He served in the United States Air Force for over 20 years and retired as a Tech Sergeant. He was married to Emma Irene Moorer Graves for 58 years. His career in the Air Force allowed visits to multiple countries, some not so pleasurable as being in Vietnam in 1966 and 1967. He did enjoy stays in Germany, England and Greece. Also visits to North Carolina, Puerto Rico, New Mexico, Florida and Maine. He got to see wonderful places like the Grand Canyon, Carlsbad Caverns, White Sands, New Mexico. He enjoyed the Tower of London, Big Ben, Buckingham Palace and the changing of the guard. Washington, D.C. and the many memorials as well as the Library of Congress, the Mint and the White House. He loved the beaches of Puerto Rico and the coast of North Carolina as well as fishing along the Neuse River. Above all he was touched by visiting the WWII, Vietnam, and Korean Memorials and the tomb of the Unknown Soldier. He admired the Grand Canyon where he witnessed more of God’s awesome handiwork and power. On a lighter note, he spent many hours on his motorcycle, racing over the sand dunes in Puerto Rico and deserts of New Mexico. He loved Banger Racing in England. Being a huge fan of Nascar, of course, he tried his hand at stock car racing at Spud Speedway in Maine. He lived a full life while serving his country. He is survived by his wife: Irene Graves of Blountsville; sons: Chuck Graves of Nashville, Tennessee and Timothy Byron-Wallace Graves and wife, Shannon of Gadsden and Robert Earl Graves of Sand Rock; grandchildren: Joshua Wyatt Graves, Jessica Loren Graves, Shelby Allison and Sarah Graves along with his great grandchildren and a host of other family and Military Friends. There was a visitation on Sunday, February 5, 2023, at Blountsville Funeral Home from 3:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. The family chose cremation with no formal service, Blountsville Funeral Home directing.
